China-ASEAN Cooperation: Challenges and Opportunities Coexist in 2017

Xu Ningning, the Executive President of China-ASEAN Business Council (CABC), said that the year 2016 was the 25th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue partnership between China and ASEAN, and the bilateral trade volume in 2016 has increased by nearly 60 times compared with that of the year 1991. However, the bilateral trade volume declined in 2016 impacted by the current world economy’s slow growth and other factors. The targeted trade development goal set by China and ASEAN is to reach one trillion USD by 2020, that is, the trade volume in next four years is supposed to be doubled or more compared with 451.8 billion USD in 2016. In this regard, we need to promote cooperation by our own efforts rather than rely on the appearance of world economy’s rapid growth.

Xu Ningning stressed that the two sides should exactly know the importance and urgency of cooperation, share complementary advantages and take active actions. ASEAN Economic Community has been in continuous improvement since its completion, which makes ASEAN economy continue to grow. China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” is benefiting and will further benefit the mutual cooperation and common development. China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) is upgrading and bringing more favorable conditions for the cooperation between two sides’ enterprises. Besides, the Joint Statement on China-ASEAN Capacity Cooperation issued in China-ASEAN Leaders Meeting held in September 2016 pushed the industry cooperation between two sides into a new stage and brought the economic and trade cooperation between two sides new life.

Ten ASEAN countries have ever jointly presented a Certificate of Honor “China-ASEAN Chief Business Expert”to Mr. Xu Ningning. Mr. Xu has engaged himself in promoting China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation for 26 years, and published 20 economics works, such as China-ASEAN: Cooperation and Development, New Business Opportunities—Faith and Action etc.

As for China-ASEAN cooperation in 2017 and in the future years, Executive President Xu Ningning proposed three suggestions: firstly, both sides should well implement the consensus that has been reached and continuously expand new consensus to jointly promote the process of regional economic integration, thus further jointly promoting the construction of Maritime Silk Road on the basis of co-discussion, co-construction and co-sharing; secondly, the cooperation between two sides should be implemented more carefully and practically, including speeding up the improvement of the existing cooperation mechanisms for a better role, enriching the concrete contents of the industry cooperation, and well docking the key point to improve the efficiency of cooperation; thirdly, entrepreneurs of both sides should not only actively seize the favorable cooperation situation to develop cooperation by making best use of the advantages and bypassing the disadvantages, but also give full play to their creativity and vitality in regional economic cooperation.

Xu Ningning mentioned that the year 2017 was the China-ASEAN Tourism Cooperation Year, and that there was a broad space for cooperation in the field of tourism. Strengthening both sides’ tourism cooperation not only can promote the development of tourism economy, but also can help to promote mutual understanding among the public.

In the end, Xu Ningning said that China and ASEAN bordered with each other with cooperative location advantage, formed traditional friendship of a long history based on the Maritime Silk Road built by our ancestors thousands of years ago, laid a solid foundation for cooperation and development because of 25-year dialogue partnership, presented strong complementarity and vitality in economic and trade cooperation, enjoyed convenient mutually-open market policies brought by China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), and faced the same realistic demand for enhancing cooperation and mutually-beneficial development. Hence, let us work hand in hand to seek common development in the new year!
