Asian Development Bank Report
A September Asian Development Bank report forecasts Myanmar's GDP growth of 2 percent. The ADB report states that Myanmar's GDP growth rate in 2021 was -5.9%. Foreign investment in Myanmar in the first nine months of 2022 was $669 million, down 82.2% year-on-year due to political tensions, ADB reported.
China is willing to continue to play a positive role in Myanmar's stable development
On November 4, 2022, the Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar said that China is willing to continue to play an active role in Myanmar's stable development, strengthen the exchange of experience in governance with Myanmar, support and assist Myanmar in advancing the domestic peace process, promote political reconciliation under the constitutional and legal framework, and promote the country's early return to the right track. China is willing to deepen cooperation in trade, infrastructure construction and power under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
China is Myanmar's largest trading partner and largest source of foreign investment
In 2021, China-Myanmar import and export trade totaled US$18.3 billion. From January to August this year, China-Myanmar trade volume increased by 32.3% year-on-year. Among them, China's exports to Myanmar increased by 38.3% year-on-year; China's imports to Myanmar increased by 24.2% year-on-year;
Xu Ningning, Executive President of the China-ASEAN Business Council and Chairman of the RCEP Industry Cooperation Committee, said that China-Myanmar has strong complementary economic and trade advantages and great development potential. At present, China-Myanmar economic and trade cooperation is facing constraints and tests such as Myanmar's internal political and economic situation and the COVID-19 pandemic. Proceeding from the international and regional situation, the relations between China and Myanmar living next to each other, and the fundamental interests of Myanmar's national development, the enhancement of economic and trade cooperation between China and Myanmar is of positive significance, and it is hoped that the investment environment of Myanmar and Myanmar, which has rich natural resources and greater space for economic development, can be fundamentally improved, which will be beneficial to Myanmar's economic growth and help China-Myanmar economic and trade cooperation achieve new development.
